Choosing a name for your
child is almost like choosing their identity.
Have you ever heard about the association of a person’s
name with his personality? That’s how our names really
work. A name can help to mold a person’s identity like a
cookie-cutter. So, it's a good idea to try
to pick the perfect name for your son or
daughter. Read on for some tips on how
to choose the best name for your little
angel.
1. Stop worrying about your family’s tradition.
You should be trying to choose the right name for your baby,
not worrying about what your relatives want you to name your
child. It's your baby’s name, not theirs. Once your baby is
born he or she will be stuck with that name for the rest
of their life. It's not a good idea to just settle
for any baby name that will suit your grandma’s or auntie’s
taste.
2. Take a moment to think about his or her future.
You don’t want your child to have a ridiculous
nickname and get made fun of by other children, right? Do some
research on the meaning of the names you
are thinking of for your baby. Don’t consider
Beelzebub as a potential name just because you heard it
from a TV show and you find it cute. Making a decision based
purely on a whim, naming them after a family member just to
please your relatives, trying to follow a fad by naming
your baby after a celebrity, or simply NOT THINKING AT ALL
in giving your precious little one his or her name are
huge no-nos!
3. Consider reading the initials of the baby name you are
planning to give your baby. Make sure they don’t stand for
anything funny, disturbing or utterly stupid.
4. Don’t overdo it. Trying to be too
creative when thinking of a name can backfire. One
example is spelling their name in an unusual way. It will
be hard for your child to have to spell out their
name to people who are only familiar with the common
spelling of the name.
5. Collaborate with your partner. It wouldn’t
be fun to be the only one who gets blamed when
people ask who chose that awful baby name, right? Okay, all
kidding aside, sharing this kind of decision-making with your
partner is a good way to further your bond as a couple,
not to mention that it's the best way to come up with
a that perfect name for your child. Remember the old saying
“two heads are better than one” - it also
applies when trying to pick the right name for
your baby.
6. Don't make the final decision until after you've met your
new child. Coming up with a list of potential names before your
baby is born is great for narrowing down your choices, but you
should wait until seeing him or her for the first time before
choosing one so that you can pick the perfect name that matches
your newborn's appearance and personality.
You might think that all of these rules are excessive and
that naming a child should be a simple process, but in the long
run, you’ll find that taking the time and effort to
pick the right name for your baby is in the best interest
of your child, and though they may never say so or even realize
it, they will appreciate the fact that you put some real
thought into it when they grow up.
